A 14 kW Generac on a 100-amp service

Running by 24 October 2025. The calculation asked for a minimum of 12 kW under NEC Article 220 Part IV and a 14 kW Generac went in on natural gas, on a composite pad, behind a 100-amp service-rated managed whole-house transfer switch with a load-management module and whole-house surge protection. Everything here is scaled to a compact house: 1,548 square feet, a refrigerator, a dishwasher, a washer and a gas dryer, on a 100-amp service. A service-rated switch matched to 100 amps rather than the more common 200 is the right answer rather than a lesser one – the switch is sized to the service the house actually has. The machine is on our Diamond plan: annual maintenance, extended parts-and-labor cover and remote monitoring that Green Sun runs directly.

12 panels and 5.16 kW

A month later, on 21 November: 12 Jinko 430-watt modules with Enphase IQ8PLUS microinverters, rail-mounted, 5.16 kW rated and estimated at 5,345 kilowatt hours in the first year. Seventy-two feet of critter guard runs the full perimeter, which it would whatever the array’s size – a small array leaves exactly the same inviting gap underneath as a large one, and the wiring up there costs the same to repair either way. The roof needed nothing. The monitoring gateway is mounted outdoors, immediately beside the generator’s transfer switch.

May of 2026. Soft washing is low pressure and a cleaning solution rather than a pressure washer, which lifts algae and mildew off siding without driving water in behind it.

Two systems, a few feet apart, doing opposite jobs

The array and the generator ended up on the same wall, and the pairing is worth more on a service this size than on a large one. On an ordinary day the panels reduce what a 100-amp service has to deliver to the house. During an outage they contribute nothing at all – a grid-tied array shuts down with the grid, so that no house is feeding power into lines somebody may be working on – and the generator supplies the house instead. Neither substitutes for the other. On 100 amps there is simply less headroom to waste, so the thing that lowers demand and the thing that replaces supply are both working against a tighter number, and both were specified by people who knew the other was coming.
