The inverter is deliberately oversized against the array rather than matched to it, which costs a little at the start and leaves the system somewhere to grow.

A ChargePoint Home Flex on a 60-amp circuit

26 October 2023. A plug-in unit on a NEMA 6-50 outlet rather than a hardwired one, on a dedicated 60-amp circuit at 11.5 kW – roughly 36 miles of range an hour. Plug-in is the more flexible of the two arrangements: the charger can be unplugged and taken along if the household moves, and a failed unit becomes a swap rather than an electrician’s visit.

Five years between, and the number that made it easy

With the charger counted in, the calculated minimum service came to 116.85 amps against a 200-amp panel. That is comfortable, and it is worth saying what it is comfortable in spite of: this house runs a heat pump, which is a large motor load that surges every time the compressor starts, alongside two refrigerators, a dishwasher, a sump pump and the laundry. A calculation that accounts for all of that and still lands at 117 amps is the difference between adding a charger in an afternoon and finding out halfway through that the panel will not take it. The array has been quietly reducing what this house draws from that same service since 2018 – not on the particular night the car is charging, necessarily, but across every year in which it does.

Glen, Karen and Chris at GSES were very prompt and thorough in replying to all my questions throughout the entire process. Given our busy weekday schedule, Glen was able to quickly schedule a site visit on a saturday and took the time to go through all the details and explaining all the assumptions. I was very impressed with the after sales long term maintenance program that comes with their contract. We were concerned about possible roof replacement given the age of the roof but Glen reviewed the roof and let us know that we would not need to replace it even though that he had an incentive to suggest it. I really appreciated his honesty. That gave me confidence that they are in it for the long haul and not just for a quick buck. Their website showed the status of every step of the process and it was easy to keep updated. We had a long township approval process and everyone at GSES did the best to help us through it.
