Glenn and Michele from Belford, NJ have been Green Sun Energy Services clients since August of 2017. Thirty-six Hanwha Q.PEAK panels went on the roof that October – 10.44 kW in all, estimated at 11,496 kWh in the first year – on an Ecolibrium rail-free mounting system. These are the all-black version of the panel, black frame and black backsheet, which reads as one dark rectangle from the street rather than a grid of silver lines. On an array of thirty-six panels covering most of a roof slope, that is the difference between a solar installation you notice and one you do not.

Solar questions from Belford homeowners
How does residential solar work on a Belford home?
The panels convert sunlight into direct-current electricity, and an inverter or microinverters convert that into alternating current the house can use. When the array produces more than the house is drawing, the surplus flows out through the utility meter under New Jersey's net-metering rules. When the house needs more than the array is making, the difference comes from the utility.
Will solar void the roof warranty?
It depends on the roof manufacturer and the installation method, so the actual warranty should be read. A properly installed attachment system follows the mounting instructions, the roofing requirements, the flashing details and the code. Treat any blanket claim that solar always voids, or never affects, a roof warranty as a reason to check.
Can panels be added to the array later?
Yes, but an expansion is more than bolting on modules. It can affect the utility interconnection, net-metering eligibility, inverter capacity, the electrical calculations, permits, incentive eligibility and monitoring. Incentive rules matter particularly when panels are added to a system already receiving a generation incentive.
