Standby Generator Installation and Standby Generator Service in Springfield, NJ by Green Sun Energy Services.
A 20 kW Generac Guardian standby generator:
In May of 2021, Green Sun Energy Services installed a Generac Guardian 20/18 kW standby generator (Model 7039-1) at a residential property in Springfield, NJ. The home is served by a 200-amp electrical service, and the system was sized for 3,500 square feet of living space. Fuel is supplied by natural gas.
The transfer arrangement is a managed whole-house setup using a 200-amp service disconnect with AC shedding. Two Generac Smart Management Modules (SMMs) are included to control two large devices — typically central air conditioning circuits — so that when the generator is running, it can shed those loads automatically if the demand approaches the unit’s capacity. This keeps the generator from being overloaded without requiring the homeowner to manually switch anything off.
The generator is equipped with the Evolution 2.0 controller, which provides Wi-Fi connectivity for remote monitoring and status alerts. The unit was set on a DiversiTech prefabricated concrete pad and fitted with a Bisque Fascia Base Trim Kit. A Group 26-R 12-volt battery handles the engine start. Grounding runs #4 AWG copper wire from the water main to the transfer switch, using green-jacketed wire on the ground conductor leg, with a separate #4 AWG copper run also connecting the water main to the automatic transfer switch. Electrical and plumbing rough-in were included as part of the installation scope.

Standby generator questions from Springfield homeowners
Does new gas piping have to be pressure tested in Springfield?
Yes. Gas piping subject to the adopted fuel-gas code must be inspected and tested before it is accepted. New Jersey adopts the 2024 International Fuel Gas Code, which governs the inspection, the test pressure and how long the test has to hold.
Can a standby generator be installed in the garage?
No. Residential air-cooled standby generators are designed for outdoor installation and must never be run inside a garage, basement, shed or any other enclosed occupied space. The engine produces carbon monoxide, which can cause serious injury or death. That is why outdoor location and separation from building openings are treated as critical rather than as preferences.
Is every generator trench eighteen inches deep?
No. Eighteen inches is a common cover requirement for certain raceway installations, but it is not a universal generator-trench rule. The code table sets different minimum cover depending on the wiring method and where it runs.
