Standby Generator Service
A Generac 20 kW standby generator — PowerBase Silver maintenance plan:
In September of 2026, Green Sun Energy Services enrolled a Middletown, NJ homeowner in a PowerBase Silver Plan covering a Generac 20 kW (18 kW on natural gas) standby generator, Model 6250 by Generac. The generator was originally installed in 2013, though not by Green Sun. The plan provides scheduled maintenance visits designed to keep the unit operating reliably so it is ready when the grid goes down.
The transfer arrangement is a managed whole-house setup with a 90-amp transfer switch. In a managed whole-house configuration, the system monitors total load on the generator and can shed selected circuits automatically if demand approaches the unit’s capacity, so the generator is not overloaded without requiring any manual action from the homeowner. The home is served by JCP&L.

Standby generator questions from Middletown homeowners
What gas pressure does a generator need?
It is model-specific and has to be read off the specification sheet rather than assumed. A current 22 kW model, for instance, specifies a minimum natural-gas pressure of 3.5 inches water column. Different models carry different requirements.
What fuel does a home standby generator use?
Most residential air-cooled standby generators are designed to run on either natural gas or vapour-withdrawn liquid propane. The generator and its fuel system have to be configured for whichever is chosen, and the required pressure, capacity and consumption figures depend on the model.
Can a generator be installed on a deck or a roof?
Platform, deck and supporting-structure installations are recognized, but they call for additional review: structural capacity, noncombustible surface requirements, fire clearance, exhaust, airflow, vibration, service access and local requirements all have to be addressed. It is a site-specific installation rather than a routine location.
