Robin from Middletown, NJ has been a Green Sun Energy Services client since May of 2019. The 20 kW standby generator at the house was installed by another company in September of 2013, and Robin moved its servicing to us nearly six years later. Every interval since has been carried out without a gap — the six-year service through to the ten-year, the last of those completed in May of 2024 with 329.3 hours on the meter and the fuel plenum inspected and clear of rust — along with a service call when the machine needed attention between visits. Can a generator be installed on a deck or a roof?
Platform, deck and supporting-structure installations are recognized, but they call for additional review: structural capacity, noncombustible surface requirements, fire clearance, exhaust, airflow, vibration, service access and local requirements all have to be addressed. It is a site-specific installation rather than a routine location.
What happens if the manufacturer and Middletown disagree?
The installation has to satisfy all applicable requirements. A manufacturer's listing cannot be ignored, and a manufacturer's minimum clearance does not cancel a municipal zoning requirement. Where requirements conflict or the interpretation is uncertain, the Authority Having Jurisdiction is consulted before the work goes in rather than after.
How much space does a generator need in front of it?
For applicable air-cooled installations, roughly three feet of unobstructed clearance at the front, for airflow and for servicing. Fences, shrubs and stored materials should not intrude into that space. Newer models should be checked against their own current manual.
