The generator was commissioned in August of 2021: a Generac Guardian rated 19.5 kW on natural gas, on a 200-amp service-entrance switch with four smart management modules. The load calculation asked for 18 kW across the 2,900 square foot house, and two heat pumps are the reason four modules were fitted – a heat pump draws several times its running load in the instant the compressor starts, and two of them starting together is the moment that decides whether a generator copes. Two sump pumps, two refrigerators, an electric dryer and a dishwasher complete the load. Annual maintenance, an extended parts-and-labor warranty and monitoring we manage all sit behind it.

Will a 22 kW generator run an entire Freehold house?

For many homes, yes, but that does not mean every load can run at the same moment. Houses with two central air conditioners, electric heat, EV charging, pool equipment or electric cooking may need load management or a larger machine. The answer comes from a load calculation rather than from the phrase whole house.

What gas pressure does a generator need?

It is model-specific and has to be read off the specification sheet rather than assumed. A current 22 kW model, for instance, specifies a minimum natural-gas pressure of 3.5 inches water column. Different models carry different requirements.

Does the generator start on its own?

Yes. A properly installed standby generator left in AUTO is designed to start automatically when it detects an unacceptable loss of utility power. The transfer system then moves the household loads across, and when acceptable utility power returns it transfers them back and the generator runs through its programmed shutdown.
