Dayananth from Summit, NJ has been a Green Sun Energy Services client since June of 2026. In July we installed two ChargePoint Level 2 stations, hardwired within ten feet of the breaker box, each carrying a 23-foot cord and a J1772 connector and each adjustable between 16 and 50 amps. Two chargers is the point where a house starts to meet its limits: the calculated demand here came to just under 172 amps against a 200-amp service, and both stations pulling their full 50 amps at the same time would have pushed past what the service can carry. Load management modules answer that without the cost and disruption of a service upgrade, easing the chargers back when the rest of the house is drawing hard and letting them run at full rate when it is not.

EV charger questions from Summit homeowners

Does a 200-amp service in Summit automatically have room for a 48-amp charger?

No. The rating on the service is not the same thing as the capacity left in it. The existing loads decide: electric heat, air conditioning, an electric range, a dryer, a water heater, a pool, a hot tub, solar equipment and anything else substantial all count against what is available. A load calculation answers the question; the number on the panel does not.

Do two chargers need twice as much electrical service?

Not necessarily. Power-management features can divide the available charging capacity between several units -- Tesla's group power management supports as many as six Wall Connectors sharing an established limit. Two chargers can be installed while the system holds their combined load to something the house can support.

Can an EV charger simply plug into an outlet?

Plug-in versions are made for NEMA 6-50 and NEMA 14-50 receptacles, but they are limited: ChargePoint permits 32 amps on a 40-amp circuit or 40 amps on a 50-amp circuit through a plug, and the higher settings require hardwiring. A receptacle used for daily high-current charging also has to be one suitable for that duty, correctly installed.
