Green Sun Energy Services has serviced a 16 kW Generac standby generator at a home in Farmingdale, a client since October of 2023. The generator was put in by another company in January of 2019, and the first visit was a startup service on a machine we had not installed — going over an unfamiliar unit from the beginning rather than picking up a maintenance history someone else had written. A year later, in October of 2024, the generator came back for its five-year service. It had 163.5 running hours on the clock by then, which is a modest figure for a machine of that age and a reminder that standby generators spend most of their lives waiting rather than working. Standby generator questions from Farmingdale homeowners
Will a 22 kW generator run an entire Farmingdale house?
For many homes, yes, but that does not mean every load can run at the same moment. Houses with two central air conditioners, electric heat, EV charging, pool equipment or electric cooking may need load management or a larger machine. The answer comes from a load calculation rather than from the phrase whole house.
Can the generator run the propane tank right down?
It is a poor outage plan. Propane should be monitored and topped up before the generator runs out. Usable capacity is not the same as the tank's nominal water capacity, and cold weather reduces how much vapour the tank can deliver just when the machine is working hardest.
How far does a generator have to be from a window or door?
Manufacturer guidance requires substantial separation from operable windows, doors, vents and other openings through which exhaust could enter the house -- commonly five feet for the applicable air-cooled configurations. The exact model's current installation manual has to be checked before a location is approved.
