An optimizer system puts DC power optimizers at the modules and a single central inverter elsewhere; a microinverter system puts a small inverter at each module. Both can provide module-level monitoring and rapid shutdown when properly designed -- they are different architectures rather than one being the upgrade of the other.

It starts with the home's actual electricity use, then with how much usable roof or ground area there is. A proper design looks at twelve months of consumption, expected future use, roof orientation, shading, roof dimensions, code-required setbacks, module wattage and the limits the utility places on interconnection.

Solar production offsets the electricity that EV charging consumes over time, which is the honest way to describe it. A grid-connected house does not route particular solar electrons into the car: production, household load and the utility meter interact through the electrical system, and the offset shows up over the year rather than moment to moment.

Dynamic power sharing allows multiple chargers to divide available electrical capacity automatically. When one vehicle finishes or draws less power, more capacity can be directed to the other vehicle.

Older or problematic equipment may warrant replacement before adding a large continuous load. An electrician should inspect the panel condition, breaker availability, listing, service size, and safety history.
