The generator was commissioned that November: a Generac Guardian rated 19.5 kW on natural gas, on a 200-amp service-entrance switch with three smart management modules and surge protection. The load calculation asked for 14 kW across the 2,490 square foot house, so there is a wide margin over the requirement. Atlantic Highlands sits on the highest ground on the Atlantic coast south of Maine, and elevation cuts both ways – the flooding risk is lower than the bayfront towns nearby, but the wind exposure is considerably worse, and wind is what brings the lines down. The generator is supported by annual maintenance, an extended parts-and-labor warranty, and monitoring we manage.
It took quite a while but getting my Generac was well with the wait. From getting all the approvals, then installing and setting up my Generac was seamless. Glen Koedding and his team were highly professional, patient and very friendly. I am comfortable knowing that my home will be comfortable should an outage should occur. All I can say is thank you!

Standby generator questions from Atlantic Highlands homeowners
Can a standby generator run central air conditioning?
Yes, when it is sized for it. The design has to account for both the running demand and the starting surge of the air-conditioning equipment. Load-management equipment can be used where necessary so that demand does not all arrive at once.
Why do outages last longer on some Atlantic Highlands streets than others?
Mature tree cover over overhead lines is the usual reason. Limbs coming down in wind, snow or ice take the lines with them, so heavily treed streets tend to see both more frequent outages and longer restoration times than open ones. It is one of the honest arguments for standby power rather than a portable generator.
How is a standby generator grounded?
The grounding and bonding arrangement depends on the transfer-switch configuration, and in particular on whether the neutral is switched and the generator therefore treated as a separately derived system. It is designed by a qualified electrical contractor rather than assumed from another installation.
