36-panel 12.24 kW solar array in East Windsor, NJ by Green Sun Energy Services.
Scott Kahrs has been a Green Sun Energy Services client since July of 2020, when the roof and the solar array were bought on the same day. The roof was finished on 19 September 2020 and the array a month later.
3,500 square feet, stripped to the deck
A single layer of old shingles came off to the sheathing and left with the dumpster. Deck protection went over the exposed sheathing, then a GAF Timberline HDZ system in Charcoal carrying a 50-year warranty, aluminum drip edge along 368 feet of rakes, eaves and valleys, and a ridge vent along the peak. Three hundred and sixty-eight feet of edge on 3,500 square feet is a roof with real shape to it, and every valley in it is a seam that has to be right before anything is fastened through it.
36 panels and 12.24 kW
Thirty-six Hanwha Q.PEAK DUO G6 panels at 340 watts each came to 12.24 kW on Ecolibrium Solar mounting, finished on 20 October 2020, running into a SolarEdge SE10000H inverter with an optimizer on every panel. JCP&L is the utility and the first year was designed for about 13,680 kWh.
Why the roof went first
An array is fastened to a roof for twenty-five years and more, so shingles near the end of their life underneath one become a second job with a date already on them — panels off, roof on, panels back. Buying both together settled that in advance, and on a roof with this many valleys it also meant the flashing and the array mounts were planned against one another rather than one being worked around the other after the fact.
I was very happy with the job Green Sun has done and the communication they consistently provided. I met someone yesterday who was looking install Solar Panels and they mentioned how painful the sales presentation was (with a very high pressure approach). I told them I have had no issues with Green Sun and I have been very happy. Glen was very professional and informative in the presentation he gave. I also had a neighbor looking for Solar last year and tried to go with a competitor, but they kept delaying things with very inconsistent communication. The communication from both Glen and Chris was always consistent, keeping me in the loop all along the process as they pushed to finish my job before the end of 2020.
Green Sun Energy Services replied
Thank you. A painful sales presentation is a real thing and it puts more people off solar than the equipment ever does. A new roof and 36 panels at your home in East Windsor is a project that needed explaining rather than selling. Glad the communication stayed consistent all the way through.

Questions from East Windsor homeowners
SolarWhat is rapid shutdown?
A code safety requirement intended to reduce hazardous voltage in controlled areas of a rooftop array during an emergency -- so that firefighters are not working around energised conductors. Modern residential systems achieve it with compliant module-level electronics and listed inverter equipment.
SolarWhat does the inverter do?
It converts the direct current the panels produce into alternating current the house and the grid can use. Residential systems generally use either a central inverter, with optimizers at the modules where applicable, or a microinverter at each module.
RoofingHow long does a typical East Windsor, NJ roof replacement take?
Many single-family asphalt shingle roofs can be completed in one to three working days, but larger or more complex roofs take longer. Plywood repairs, steep slopes, multiple chimneys, solar panels, weather delays, inspections, and difficult access can extend the schedule.
RoofingHow many layers of shingles can a roof have?
The residential code limits reroofing over existing roofing, including where the roof already carries the maximum number of layers permitted. The municipal permit review and a physical inspection settle what is acceptable on a particular house rather than a general rule.
RoofingDoes a wind warranty with no speed limit mean the roof cannot blow off?
No. It is a limited warranty without a maximum wind-speed limitation for qualifying systems, and that is a statement about coverage rather than about physics. Storm damage remains possible and the coverage remains subject to the warranty's terms and exclusions.
