Kimberly from Millstone Township, NJ has been a Green Sun Energy Services client since July of 2021, and booked the roof and the array on the same day. 5,500 square feet of new roof
The old roof was a single layer of shingles, which is the straightforward case – it was stripped to the sheathing and carted away rather than roofed over, so the decking could be looked at before anything new went down. The new composition shingle is pewter gray, warranted fifty years. At 5,500 square feet this is a large roof by any measure, and the size is most of the argument for doing it once and doing it properly – a lifetime roofing system under an array is a roof the panels should never have to come off for.

Thirty-six LG modules feed a single SolarEdge inverter with an optimizer on every panel, which is the arrangement a roof this size tends to ask for: a large roof usually means several planes facing several ways, and optimizers let each panel produce on its own rather than pulling its string down with it. The inverter is deliberately oversized against the array. The house is on a 200-amp service, and the first-year estimate is 10,064 kilowatt hours. JCP&L interconnected it in December.
Why the roof went first
Panels are fixed to the roof they are installed on, and taking an array off and putting it back is a job in its own right – one this house would have faced within a few years had the panels gone up first. Replacing the roofing system a week beforehand removed that job entirely. It is the most useful thing to get right when a re-roof and an array are both due, and it is only available to someone who plans the two together.
