EV Charger Installation in Freehold, NJ | A Charger and a 200-Amp Service Upgrade

Freehold, NJ · Client since September 2024

Marybeth from Freehold, NJ has been a Green Sun Energy Services client since September of 2024. The charger went in on 26 November: a hardwired ChargePoint Level 2 unit rated 11.5 kW on a dedicated 60-amp circuit, with the load calculation putting the minimum service at 133 amps. A service upgrade followed in February – the supply taken underground and up to 200 amps with a new forty-space panel. That is the other answer when a load calculation comes back above what a panel can carry: load management holds a charger inside an existing service, and upgrading the service removes the constraint altogether. Which one suits depends on the house, and it is a question worth settling before the charger is ordered rather than after.

EV charger questions from Freehold homeowners

What is bidirectional charging?

Bidirectional charging allows energy to flow from the vehicle battery back to a home or grid when supported by the vehicle and equipment. It is more complex than ordinary charging and should be designed as a power system, not just an outlet.

Does a 200-amp service in Freehold automatically have room for a 48-amp charger?

No. The rating on the service is not the same thing as the capacity left in it. The existing loads decide: electric heat, air conditioning, an electric range, a dryer, a water heater, a pool, a hot tub, solar equipment and anything else substantial all count against what is available. A load calculation answers the question; the number on the panel does not.

How long should the charging cable be?

Choose a cable that comfortably reaches the charge port in likely parking positions without being stretched or creating a trip hazard. Longer is not always better because excess cable must be stored safely.
