24 kW and a Charger Six Weeks Apart in Lincroft

A 24 kW Generac on three management modules

Commissioned on 15 May 2023. The calculation asked for a minimum of 17 kW under NEC Article 220 Part IV and a Generac rated 21 kW on natural gas went in – 24 kW were it running on propane – behind a 200-amp managed whole-house transfer switch with whole-house surge protection and three smart management modules. Three is more than most houses need, and the load survey explains it: 3,467 square feet with a refrigerator, a separate freezer, a dishwasher, a washer, a gas dryer and two sump pumps. Each module takes charge of one large intermittent load and holds it back only for as long as it would otherwise overrun the machine, which is what lets a whole-house switch stay a whole-house switch on a property this size. The generator has been on our Diamond plan since: annual maintenance, extended parts-and-labor cover and remote monitoring that Green Sun runs directly.

A ChargePoint on a 60-amp circuit

31 July, six weeks later. The household bought the charger and we installed it – hardwired, J1772, on a dedicated 60-amp circuit at 11.5 kW, roughly 36 miles of range an hour, with a management module of its own.

Why this is the easy order

Adding a car charger to a house that already has a standby generator is the simplest version of this job, and it is worth saying why. The generator forced a proper survey of the service in May – every load in the house counted, measured, and given a module where it needed one. By the end of July, when the charger arrived, none of that had to be repeated. The only new question was whether the panel and the machine could take another large intermittent load, and three-quarters of the answer was already written down. It also means the charger is managed from both directions: held back by its own module when the panel is busy, and held back again by the generator’s arrangement when the machine is carrying the house. A car that charges overnight is the easiest big load in a home to defer, and this house is set up to defer it.

Because 48-amp charging is a continuous load, and the code requires the overcurrent protection for a continuous load to be sized at not less than 125 percent of it. Forty-eight amps multiplied by 1.25 is sixty. The breaker is not oversized; it is sized correctly for a load that runs for hours without pause.

Possibly. A generator can significantly increase a home's maximum gas demand. If the existing meter or service cannot hold the required pressure while supplying the generator and the other appliances together, the gas utility may require an upgrade.
