A 2013 Machine Taken On in Red Bank, NJ

Red Bank, NJ · Client since September 2021

Mitchell from Red Bank, NJ has been a Green Sun Energy Services client since September of 2021. The generator was installed by another company and commissioned in October of 2013: a 20 kW Generac on natural gas, on a 90-amp managed whole-house switch. The servicing came to us at the eight-year mark, and a MobileLink monitoring unit was ordered and fitted the following year – a machine of that age predates built-in connectivity, so monitoring has to be added rather than switched on. Every interval since has been kept, with equipment ordered and an installation visit completed as recently as this year. Annual maintenance, an extended parts-and-labor warranty and the monitoring all sit behind it.

Standby generator questions from Red Bank homeowners

Does the transfer switch need flood protection as well as the generator?

Yes. A flood review should cover much more than the generator enclosure. FEMA recommends that a residential standby system consider elevation or protection of the generator, the transfer switch, the normal and emergency panels, the feeders and the control wiring together.

Why do outages last longer on some Red Bank streets than others?

Mature tree cover over overhead lines is the usual reason. Limbs coming down in wind, snow or ice take the lines with them, so heavily treed streets tend to see both more frequent outages and longer restoration times than open ones. It is one of the honest arguments for standby power rather than a portable generator.

Can a generator be raised on a platform?

Yes. Manufacturer guidance specifically covers installations on platforms and other supporting structures, and directs them to the applicable fire-safety standard, including a noncombustible surface extending beyond the generator for the configuration addressed. Flood and structural requirements have to be satisfied as well.
