New Jersey adopts the National Electrical Code through the Uniform Construction Code, and the edition in force statewide is what the municipal inspector enforces. EV charging is governed principally by Article 625, which covers the branch circuit, overcurrent protection, continuous loads, load management, the disconnecting means, ground-fault protection and cord management.
What is the difference between a NEMA 6-50 and a NEMA 14-50?
Both are used for 240-volt EV charging, but they are wired differently: a 14-50 includes a neutral conductor and a 6-50 normally does not. Most charging equipment uses two hot conductors and an equipment ground and has no need of the neutral. The equipment's own instructions decide which is correct.
