EV charger questions from Bridgewater homeowners
Can an older Bridgewater home on a 100-amp service charge an electric car?
Often, yes. A 100-amp house is not automatically disqualified from Level 2 charging. The options include commissioning the charger at a lower amperage, running a proper service-load calculation, using load management or a listed energy-management system, or upgrading the service where the numbers genuinely require it.
What is a ChargePoint Home Flex?
A Wi-Fi connected Level 2 residential charger with an adjustable output. Current Home Flex equipment can be configured for 16, 24, 32, 40, 48 or 50 amps depending on how it is installed, which is what makes it useful on a house whose electrical service cannot support the highest setting.
Why does the charger sit on a 60-amp breaker?
Because 48-amp charging is a continuous load, and the code requires the overcurrent protection for a continuous load to be sized at not less than 125 percent of it. Forty-eight amps multiplied by 1.25 is sixty. The breaker is not oversized; it is sized correctly for a load that runs for hours without pause.
