Maria and Adrian from Howell, NJ have been Green Sun Energy Services clients since September of 2024. A ChargePoint CPH50 went in that November, hardwired on a dedicated 60-amp circuit and fitted with the J1772 connector every non-Tesla car in North America uses. At 11.5 kW it adds about 36 miles of range an hour, which is the figure that matters more than the headline rating: a normal overnight stop refills far more than a day of driving, so the car leaves full every morning without anyone having to think about it.

EV charger questions from Howell homeowners
What should a Howell homeowner look for in an EV charger installer?
One that treats the charger, the car, the electrical service, the permit and any utility programme as a single system rather than fitting a 60-amp breaker because the charger will take one. That means the household's actual daily driving, what the vehicle's onboard charger accepts, the connector, the service rating, a proper load calculation, the capacity left in the panel, Article 625 and the manufacturer's installation instructions, the correct breaker and conductor sizes, hardwired or plug-in, indoor or outdoor, the municipal permit and final inspection, commissioning and network setup, whatever incentives are open at the time, off-peak charging, how it interacts with solar or back-up power if the house has either, and the second car that may arrive later. The question worth asking is which charging system gives the house the speed it actually needs without upgrading the service unnecessarily.
Does an EV charging receptacle need ground-fault protection?
The current code carries ground-fault requirements for receptacles used for EV charging. That requirement, and the nuisance tripping that can come with a high continuous load behind it, is one of the reasons hardwiring is often preferred for a permanent installation.
Can a NACS charger charge a car that is not a Tesla?
It depends on the vehicle's connector and on which charger it is. A standard Tesla Wall Connector uses NACS. The Universal version carries an integrated J1772 adapter as well, which makes it the more flexible arrangement for a household running more than one brand, and many manufacturers are moving to NACS in any case.
