A 22 kW Generac, and a switch that replaced the main
Commissioned on 10 October 2024. The calculation asked for a minimum of 17 kW under NEC Article 220 Part IV and a Generac rated 19.5 kW on natural gas went in – 22 kW on propane – on its own pad, with whole-house surge protection and a smart management module. The house is 2,700 square feet on a 150-amp service, with two refrigerators, a dishwasher, a washer, a gas dryer, an electric oven and microwave, and a heat pump.
The transfer switch is the part worth explaining. Rather than adding one downstream of the existing equipment, the 150-amp exterior main disconnect was removed and a service-rated transfer switch put in its place. That is a tidier arrangement than it sounds: one enclosure on the wall instead of two, the utility feed landing directly in the device that decides where the house is fed from, and one fewer set of terminations between the meter and the panel. It also means the switch is rated to the service this house actually has rather than to a larger standard number.

Six weeks later, and up before Thanksgiving. Two hundred and sixty-four C9 bulbs in warm white along the roofline – the large traditional bulb rather than the small modern one, at 2700K, the warm end of white. Installed for the season and taken down after it.
