Standby Generator Installation
An 18 kW Generac standby generator:
Irene in Middletown, NJ had Green Sun Energy Services install a Generac 18/17 kW natural gas standby generator in September of 2026. The home is served by a 200-amp electrical service, and the system was sized for 2,300 square feet of living space.
The transfer arrangement is a managed whole-house setup using a 200-amp Service Entrance Rated Automatic Transfer Switch with an integrated surge protection device (Generac Model G0099280). When JCP&L power goes out, the switch detects the outage and signals the generator to start, then transfers the full load automatically. Because it is a whole-house configuration, Irene does not have to decide which circuits stay live — everything comes back on.
One Load Management Module is wired in to handle one 60-amp device. If the generator’s demand approaches its limit while that load is running, the module sheds it automatically and restores it when capacity allows, without any manual action required.
The generator itself is the Generac Next Generation Air-Cooled model, Model 7259, rated at 18 kW on liquid propane and 17 kW on natural gas — here running on natural gas. Connectivity is built in: the unit includes cellular, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth, so Irene can check status and receive alerts remotely. A 12-volt start battery is included. The unit sits on a 5,000 PSI precast concrete pad measuring 54″ × 32″ × 3″ and weighing 190 pounds.
The installation included up to 20 feet of electrical work and 20 feet of plumbing. Grounding was handled with #4 AWG green-jacket copper ground wire, and a #4 AWG copper bond was run from the water main to the service main. To meet NJAC 5:23-3.16, one grounding rod and an intersystem bonding bridge were installed.
The generator carries a 5-year limited warranty from Generac and a 5-year limited workmanship warranty from Green Sun Energy Services. Irene also has a generator service plan in place, which includes annual maintenance visits and an extended parts-and-labor warranty — so the unit will be looked after on a regular schedule going forward.

Standby generator questions from Middletown homeowners
How is the gas pipe size worked out?
From the generator's demand, the available pressure, the pipe length, the allowable pressure drop, the fittings, the pipe material and every other appliance connected to the system. The adopted fuel-gas code carries the sizing requirements and tables, and the model's published fuel consumption goes into the calculation.
Can Middletown require a generator to sit farther from the house than the manufacturer does?
Yes. Another applicable requirement can result in greater separation than the manufacturer's listed minimum -- equipment may be permitted eighteen inches from a qualifying wall while the local ordinance requires several feet from a property line. Both requirements have to be satisfied; neither cancels the other.
How level does a generator have to be?
Within the leveling tolerance specified in its installation manual -- applicable air-cooled instructions have used roughly a half-inch overall. A poorly prepared base can settle after installation and bring on drainage, vibration or enclosure problems that were not there on the day it went in.
