Standby Generator Service and Holiday Lighting in Lincroft, NJ | The Lights Came First

Lincroft, NJ · Client since November 2024

Steve from Lincroft, NJ has been a Green Sun Energy Services client since November of 2024, and the lights came before the generator – the reverse of the usual order on these pages.

114 bulbs, and five feet of them new

November of 2024. A hundred and fourteen C9 bulbs along the roofline, the household’s own set rather than a new one, put up for the season and taken down after it. Two details from the work order say more about the job than the count does. Five feet of additional lights were added along the lower roof, matched as closely as possible to a set bought some years earlier – and the wreath was hand-strung rather than bought ready-made. Neither is difficult. Both are exactly the sort of thing that quietly does not happen when a household is doing this for itself, from a ladder, in the dark, in late November.

A 17 kW Generac taken on at eleven years

The following March the servicing of the standby generator moved to us as well: a 17 kW Generac commissioned by another company in November of 2013, behind a managed whole-house transfer switch rated at 65 amps. Eleven years is a long way into a machine’s life to take one on. The original installer is long out of the picture, the early service intervals are well behind it, and what decides whether it starts in its fifteenth year is simply whether somebody keeps opening the enclosure once a year. It is on our Silver plan now, which is what that amounts to in practice: annual maintenance, on the calendar, by someone whose job it is to remember.

Questions from Lincroft homeowners

Standby generatorCan a generator be installed in a flood zone in Lincroft?

Yes, but the generator and its electrical equipment may need to be elevated or otherwise protected. The installation is evaluated against the property's FEMA flood zone, its Base Flood Elevation and Design Flood Elevation, the municipal flood ordinance, any applicable freeboard, and NJDEP requirements where they apply. It is a property-by-property assessment rather than a rule of thumb.

Holiday lightingCan an installer copy a Christmas light design I saw online?

Usually yes, or create something similar that works with the architecture of your particular home. Photos are useful for communicating color, brightness, roofline style, tree wrapping, wreath size, density and overall design. The exact display may still need to change because of roof shape, outlet locations, landscaping or access.

Standby generatorDoes a 200-amp service need a 200-amp transfer switch?

A transfer switch installed in the service path has to be rated appropriately for the service and the configuration. A 200-amp service commonly uses a 200-amp service-rated switch, but the actual design is confirmed by the electrician rather than assumed from the service size.
