Up in early December of 2024 and down again after the season. Three hundred and ten C9 bulbs in red and white along the roofline – C9 being the large traditional bulb rather than the small modern one, and two colors rather than one, which needs a clean uninterrupted run of eave to read as deliberate instead of busy.
The take-down is the half of this service that earns its keep. Putting lights up in early December is a pleasant enough afternoon. Taking them down in January – cold, wet, short days, a ladder on frozen ground – is the job that gets postponed to March, and then to whenever somebody finally notices them in June.
A 24 kW Generac taken on in its first year
The machine is a 24 kW Generac behind a managed whole-house transfer switch, commissioned by another company at the very end of December 2025. Its servicing came to us the following spring, starting with the first-year service. Taking a generator on that early is the cleanest version of a takeover there is: nothing has been missed, the original warranty is entirely intact, and the service record begins at the beginning rather than picking up somewhere in the middle with a gap nobody can account for. It is on our Silver plan – annual maintenance, on the calendar, by somebody whose job it is to remember.

It is a poor outage plan. Propane should be monitored and topped up before the generator runs out. Usable capacity is not the same as the tank's nominal water capacity, and cold weather reduces how much vapour the tank can deliver just when the machine is working hardest.
