In June we installed a ChargePoint Level 2 station in the garage, hardwired within ten feet of the breaker box on its own 60-amp circuit, with a 23-foot cord, a built-in cable rack and a J1772 connector. Hardwiring rather than using a plug is what allows the station to run at up to 50 amps, and the 60-amp circuit is sized to carry that continuously, which is the difference between adding a few miles an hour overnight and filling most of a battery. The charger is adjustable from 16 amps upward, so the rate can be brought down if the rest of the house ever needs the headroom, and the long cord means the car can be parked either way round without moving anything.

Can an older Farmingdale home on a 100-amp service charge an electric car?

Often, yes. A 100-amp house is not automatically disqualified from Level 2 charging. The options include commissioning the charger at a lower amperage, running a proper service-load calculation, using load management or a listed energy-management system, or upgrading the service where the numbers genuinely require it.

Can a ChargePoint charger charge a Tesla?

Yes. ChargePoint offers Home Flex with either a J1772 or a NACS connector. The NACS version connects directly to compatible Tesla vehicles, and the J1772 version charges a Tesla through the adapter Tesla supplies.

Does the receptacle behind a plug-in charger matter?

It does. A receptacle carrying a high current for hours every night takes far more thermal stress than one used occasionally for an appliance, so it needs to be a device suitable for that duty and correctly installed. This is a large part of why hardwiring is often preferred for a permanent installation.
