A new roof
About 3,200 square feet of GAF Timberline Lifetime shingle, stripped and replaced in June of 2022, taking in 349 feet of rakes, eaves and valleys. Those are the edges and the water channels, and they are where the ice-and-water membrane has to go.
11.1 kW of solar
Thirty REC 370-watt panels on a Snap-N-Rack mounting system, finished in August of 2022, with first-year production estimated at 13,883 kWh. The install took in 252 feet of critter guard around the perimeter of the array.
Why the order matters
A roof has to come off before an array can go back on it, and taking panels down and refitting them is a job in its own right. Doing the roof first meant the array went onto a deck with its full life ahead of it, and nothing on this house has to come apart to get at anything else.

No. Ice dams come from snow melting on the warmer parts of a roof and refreezing at the colder edge, which is driven by attic heat loss, insulation, air leakage, ventilation and the weather. Keeping the gutters clear is worth doing, but it is not a substitute for the attic and roof design that causes the problem.
