Live on 8 September 2013: 31 ET Solar 235-watt modules on Enphase M215 microinverters, rail-free mounting, split 4.94 and 2.35 kW across two roof faces and estimated at 7,270 kilowatt hours in the first year. It ran for thirteen years and came off the roof for the roof’s sake rather than its own – it did the job it was bought to do, and then some.

July of 2025. Soft washing is low pressure and a cleaning solution rather than a pressure washer, which lifts algae and mildew off siding without driving water in behind it.
The array removed, and disposed of
When the roof came due for replacement, the household had a straightforward choice: take thirteen-year-old panels down, store them somewhere while the roofers worked, and hang them back afterwards – or retire them and start the roof clean. The panels came down and were disposed of.
At 235 watts a panel, that is usually the right answer. A 2013 module produces roughly half what a current one of the same size does, so an old array occupies a full roof to deliver a fraction of what that roof could now carry – and the labor of removing, storing and resetting it can approach what the array is still worth. Retiring equipment that has already returned its cost is not a loss. It is what the end of a working life looks like.
3,900 square feet of new roof
April of 2026, onto a bare deck with nothing in the way. A single layer stripped to the sheathing and carted off, then 3,900 square feet of GAF Timberline HDZ in weathered wood, warranted fifty years, with continuous soffit vents at the intake.
Thirteen years, start to finish
Few pages in this portfolio run a system from installation through to retirement, and it is worth having. An array is not a permanent fixture bolted to a house forever; it is equipment with a working life, fastened to another piece of equipment with a working life of its own. Here the panels earned back what they cost, kept going well beyond that, and were taken down by the same company that put them up – on the same visit that gave the house a lifetime roofing system to start again from. Whatever goes on this roof next will be going onto something new.

Green Sun Energy Services installed my solar panels over 10 years ago and I have never had any complaints with their support, as a long-term customer.
I highly recommend Green Sun if you are going to go solar. However, it was only recently that I realized they also offer the soft/pressure wash services.
