An 18 kW standby generator

A Generac 7226 rated 18 kW on propane and 17 kW on natural gas, running on natural gas, on a 150-amp transfer switch, commissioned in January of 2022. The house is about 2,000 square feet. Green Sun has serviced it in January of 2023, February of 2024, January of 2025 and January of 2026, and it reports to remote monitoring in between.

An EV charger

A ChargePoint Home Flex, hardwired rather than plugged in, on a 60-amp circuit, finished in January of 2025. It delivers around 11.5 kW through a J1772 connector. The load calculation put the minimum service panel at about 149 amps.

Why the order helped

A charger is one of the largest loads a house can add, and a standby system has already had the service looked at properly once. The panel, the loads and what the house actually draws at once were all documented from the generator job, so the charger was a question of capacity rather than a survey from scratch.

One that treats the charger, the car, the electrical service, the permit and any utility programme as a single system rather than fitting a 60-amp breaker because the charger will take one. That means the household's actual daily driving, what the vehicle's onboard charger accepts, the connector, the service rating, a proper load calculation, the capacity left in the panel, Article 625 and the manufacturer's installation instructions, the correct breaker and conductor sizes, hardwired or plug-in, indoor or outdoor, the municipal permit and final inspection, commissioning and network setup, whatever incentives are open at the time, off-peak charging, how it interacts with solar or back-up power if the house has either, and the second car that may arrive later. The question worth asking is which charging system gives the house the speed it actually needs without upgrading the service unnecessarily.

Applicable air-cooled guidance requires roughly five feet of overhead clearance from structures, overhangs and projections. That is what rules out a good many low decks, roof overhangs and alcoves as generator locations, and it is worth establishing early rather than after a site is chosen.

The 2023 National Electrical Code contains requirements addressing emergency shutdown of generator prime movers. Whether and how they apply is determined from the generator's rating, its location, the model and the installation, and the factory equipment is evaluated against them rather than presumed to comply.
