Standby Generator Installation and EV Charger Installation in Bound Brook, NJ | Two Chargers and a Generator

Bound Brook, NJ · Client since October 2024

Christopher from Bound Brook, NJ has been a Green Sun Energy Services client since October of 2024, and had both jobs finished a day apart the following March.

A 17 kW Generac on two management modules

Commissioned on 3 March 2025. The calculation asked for a minimum of 11 kW under NEC Article 220 Part IV and a Generac rated 17 kW on natural gas went in – 18 kW on propane – behind a 200-amp managed whole-house transfer switch with whole-house surge protection and two smart management modules, one rated 100 amps and one 50. The house is 1,164 square feet, and the modules are not there because of its size. They are there because of the heat pump. A compressor draws several times its running current in the instant it starts, and a machine large enough to swallow that surge unmanaged would be far bigger than this house needs for the rest of the year. The module absorbs the start instead. The generator has been on our Diamond plan since it was commissioned.

Two Tesla Universal wall connectors

The next day, 4 March. Two of them, rated 11.5 kW on a dedicated 60-amp circuit, adding roughly 36 miles of range an hour. Universal is the specification worth noticing: these carry the Tesla NACS connector and J1772 both, so they charge whatever is in the driveway now and whatever replaces it later. On a household running two charging points that is the difference between a wall fitting and a commitment to one manufacturer.

A small house, two charging points, one calculation

With both chargers counted in, the calculated minimum service came to 88.72 amps against the 200-amp supply already in place – under half of it. That is what an eleven-hundred-square-foot house with a heat pump and two charging points genuinely asks for, and it is a useful figure for anyone who assumes a second charger means an upgrade. It usually does not. The generator was the job that needed the arithmetic done carefully: eleven kilowatts of calculated demand, a compressor that surges every time it starts, and two management modules doing work that would otherwise have been done by buying a much larger machine. The chargers went into the space that was already proven to be there.

Questions from Bound Brook homeowners

Standby generatorWhat happens if the manufacturer and Bound Brook disagree?

The installation has to satisfy all applicable requirements. A manufacturer's listing cannot be ignored, and a manufacturer's minimum clearance does not cancel a municipal zoning requirement. Where requirements conflict or the interpretation is uncertain, the Authority Having Jurisdiction is consulted before the work goes in rather than after.

EV chargingDo two chargers need twice as much electrical service?

Not necessarily. Power-management features can divide the available charging capacity between several units -- Tesla's group power management supports as many as six Wall Connectors sharing an established limit. Two chargers can be installed while the system holds their combined load to something the house can support.

Standby generatorIs a standby generator the same as a portable one?

No. A home standby generator is permanently installed and automatically connected to the home's electrical and fuel systems. A portable normally has to be placed, fuelled, started and connected by hand each time, using approved connection equipment. The standby machine is designed as an integrated backup-power system rather than as something you fetch out of the garage.
