Americo from Keyport, NJ has been a Green Sun Energy Services client since April of 2025. The charger went in that June: a hardwired ChargePoint Level 2 unit with a J1772 connector rated 11.5 kW, on a dedicated 60-amp circuit. The unit itself was supplied by the household rather than by us, which is a perfectly sensible way to do it – the equipment is often bought with the car, and what actually needs a contractor is the circuit, the permit and the inspection rather than the box on the wall. The load calculation put the minimum service at 99 amps against the 150-amp supply already in place, so the circuit went in without the panel being touched. A permit was filed and a utility rebate application submitted as part of the job.

Why does the charger sit on a 60-amp breaker?
Because 48-amp charging is a continuous load, and the code requires the overcurrent protection for a continuous load to be sized at not less than 125 percent of it. Forty-eight amps multiplied by 1.25 is sixty. The breaker is not oversized; it is sized correctly for a load that runs for hours without pause.
Can I add an EV charger to a home with a solar battery?
Yes. The design should consider whether the charger is backed up, whether the battery can support the load, and how the home's energy-management system prioritizes charging during outages or peak-rate periods.
Does Keyport inspect an EV charger installation?
Where the work requires an electrical permit, the municipal electrical inspector reviews it before the permit is closed.
