3,800 square feet of new roof
Finished on 12 September 2022: a single layer stripped to the sheathing and carted away rather than covered over, then 3,800 square feet of composition shingle in pewter gray, warranted fifty years, with continuous soffit vents at the intake.

Four days later the array went up – 22 REC 405-watt modules on a SolarEdge Energy Hub inverter, rail-free mounting, split 6.48 and 2.43 kW across two roof faces, estimated at 11,012 kilowatt hours in the first year and interconnected by PSE&G in November. A hundred and ninety-two feet of critter guard went on around it.
A SolarEdge charger, matched to the inverter
February of 2025, and the make is the whole point. This is a SolarEdge charger rather than the ChargePoint we fit more often – a 40-amp circuit at 7.7 kW, adding roughly 25 miles of range an hour. It was chosen because a SolarEdge Energy Hub inverter was already on the wall. The car, the panels and the production now report through one system instead of three that do not talk to each other, and the household has one app to look at rather than a folder of them.
Four days, and then two and a half years
The four days between the roof and the array were deliberate. Panels are fixed to the roofing system beneath them, so an array laid over a roof that still needs replacing is simply a bill to take the array off again, deferred. The two and a half years before the charger were not planned, and that is the more useful half of the story: nothing about the 2022 work had to be undone to add a car charger in 2025. The service was already understood, the inverter already the right one to hang a charger off, and the roof underneath it all had decades left on its warranty. Work done in the right order keeps paying long after everybody has stopped thinking about it.
