Generator, Solar, EV Charger and Holiday Lighting in Tinton Falls, NJ | Four Trades, Client Since 2020

Tinton Falls, NJ · Client since August 2020

Elizabeth from Tinton Falls, NJ has been a Green Sun Energy Services client since August of 2020. Four trades in five years, and they arrived in the reverse of the usual order – the generator first and the array last, with a car charger in between.

A 16 kW Generac on a 200-amp managed switch

The load calculation asked for a minimum of 15 kW under NEC Article 220 Part IV and a 16 kW natural-gas Generac went in, running by January. It sits behind a 200-amp managed whole-house transfer switch with two load-management modules and whole-house surge protection. Those modules are what let a machine this size carry a whole house rather than a nominated list of circuits: instead of choosing what to leave off in advance, they shed the largest intermittent loads only for as long as those loads would otherwise overrun the generator.

A ChargePoint charger on a 50-amp circuit

In November of 2022 we installed a ChargePoint Home Flex the homeowner had bought herself – hardwired, J1772, on a 50-amp circuit. Supplying your own hardware is perfectly sensible. What matters is that the circuit and the service behind it are sized by somebody who has seen the rest of the load, and by then we had.

24 REC panels and 11.04 kW

This one came in two halves, months apart. We took the original array off first, so that a major remodel could go ahead and the roof could be replaced by the homeowner’s contractor with nothing in the way. Then, in February of 2025, we came back and installed a completely new system on the finished roof: 24 REC 460-watt panels on a SolarEdge inverter, 11.04 kW rated and estimated at 13,891 kilowatt hours a year. Removing an array and putting one back is not the same job as replacing it in a single visit – the old system comes off intact and the new one is designed for the roof that now exists rather than fitted to the mounting that used to be there. It also has to sit on a service already carrying a standby generator and a car charger, which by then it did.

218 warm white C9 bulbs

In November of 2025 we ran warm white C9 lights along the roofline – 218 bulbs, which is a full roofline rather than a token run over the front door.

Four trades on one service

Everything electrical here went onto the same 200-amp service, and it arrived in the least convenient order. That ordering usually costs somebody money, because each addition has to be reconciled with whatever is already in the panel rather than planned alongside it. What kept this one straightforward is dull: the same contractor did the load calculation every time and knew what the previous jobs had left behind. A whole-house switch with load management, specified in 2020 for a generator, is the sort of decision that keeps paying when a car charger turns up two years later.

I couldn’t be happier with the services Green Sun Energy provides. They did such a great job installing our generator, after getting an electric vehicle I decided to have them install an EV charger in my garage. It’s been amazing! And Glen and his team at Green Sun made it so easy. The charger was installed in a perfect location and hardwired to my electric panel. They also made sure I had all the paperwork needed to file for reimbursements with the state and the electric company and I received the full amount allowed under the “make ready” program – $1,500. Now it’s a breeze to charge my car!

Green Sun Energy Services replied

Thank you, Elizabeth. Four different trades at one house in Tinton Falls, a generator, solar, an EV charger and the holiday lighting, is about as far as a relationship goes with us. Coming back for the charger after the generator is the part we are proudest of, because that decision was made on the first experience.

Questions from Tinton Falls homeowners

SolarHow does residential solar work on a Tinton Falls home?

The panels convert sunlight into direct-current electricity, and an inverter or microinverters convert that into alternating current the house can use. When the array produces more than the house is drawing, the surplus flows out through the utility meter under New Jersey's net-metering rules. When the house needs more than the array is making, the difference comes from the utility.

Standby generatorCan the existing natural-gas service in a Tinton Falls home supply a generator?

Often yes, but the gas system has to be evaluated first. The review covers the generator's BTU demand, meter capacity, available pressure, regulator capacity, pipe diameter and length, and every other gas appliance in the house -- furnace, boiler, water heater, range and fireplace among them.

EV chargingHow long does it take to charge an electric car at home?

That depends on the size of the battery, how depleted it is, the capacity of the vehicle's onboard charger and the output of the charging equipment. A charger capable of 48 amps does not mean every vehicle will draw 48 amps. The car has the final say in how much AC power it accepts.

Holiday lightingWhat lights go on bushes and trees?

Commercial-grade LED mini lights, typically on strands with about four inches between bulbs — roughly three bulbs to a linear foot of strand. The spacing on the wire stays the same; how bright the plant looks is controlled by how tightly the strand is wrapped around it.

Standby generatorCan a generator go under a deck?

Only if the specific installation satisfies every requirement for overhead clearance, airflow, exhaust, fire separation, carbon-monoxide safety and service access. Because the applicable guidance commonly requires substantial overhead clearance, many ordinary under-deck locations will not qualify. It is a site-specific review rather than a standard placement.
