Fourteen Years of Generator Service, a Roof and 32 Panels in Lincroft

Lincroft, NJ · Client since November 2012

Daniel from Lincroft, NJ has been a Green Sun Energy Services client since 2012, and the record here runs longer than almost any other on the site. The generator was installed by another company and commissioned in November of 2012: an 8 kW Generac on natural gas, on a 35-amp indoor transfer switch in the basement. The servicing came to us at the eight-year mark and has not lapsed since – visits in December of 2020, November of 2021, November of 2022, November of 2023 and September of 2024, with a billable service call in October of 2025 on top. Six visits in six years on a machine now in its fourteenth year is the whole argument for a service record, and it is why the machine is still running. The roof followed in March of 2023 – a single layer stripped to the sheathing and hauled away, then 3,200 square feet of new composition shingle in pewter gray with a 50-year warranty, along with new gutters. The array went on two months later: 32 panels making 12.96 kW into a SolarEdge Energy Hub inverter, across two roof faces of 7.29 and 5.67 kW, with an estimated 15,475 kilowatt hours in the first year. JCP&L interconnected it in June.

Questions from Lincroft homeowners

How much does shade from mature Lincroft trees affect production?

Shade can materially reduce production, particularly when it falls during the highest-production hours. Module-level electronics such as microinverters and optimisers reduce the effect of partial shading, but they cannot create sunlight where there is none. Significant shade should be modelled before any annual production figure is quoted.

How does an optimiser system differ from microinverters?

An optimiser system puts DC power optimisers at the modules and a single central inverter elsewhere; a microinverter system puts a small inverter at each module. Both can provide module-level monitoring and rapid shutdown when properly designed -- they are different architectures rather than one being the upgrade of the other.

Does a manufacturer's roof warranty cover the contractor's workmanship?

It depends entirely on which warranty. Base product warranties commonly do not include workmanship at all, while enhanced warranties available through certified contractors can provide specified workmanship protection when qualifying products are used. Identify the warranty by its actual name rather than accepting the word warranty on its own.
