Two layers off, 1,700 square feet on
This roof had been covered over once already, so two layers of old shingle came off down to the sheathing rather than one — twice the tear-off and twice the disposal on a compact roof. What went back on is GAF Timberline American Harvest rather than the standard line used on most of the roofs described here, carrying the same 50-year warranty, over deck protection on the exposed sheathing, with aluminum drip edge along 142 feet of rakes and eaves.
34 panels and 10.2 kW
Thirty-four Hanwha Q.PEAK panels at 300 watts each came to 10.2 kW on Ecolibrium Solar mounting, finished on 14 July 2017, running into a SolarEdge SE10000A inverter with an optimizer on every panel. JCP&L is the utility and the first year was designed for about 14,317 kWh.
The number worth noticing here
Ten point two kilowatts designed for 14,317 kWh works out at roughly 1,400 kWh for every kilowatt installed, which is at the strong end of anything on this site. Thirty-four panels on 1,700 square feet is also dense coverage — this array uses a great deal of the available roof, and the roof it is using happens to be well placed. Those two things together are why a modest house carries a system this size.
Why the roof went first
An array is bolted to a roof for twenty-five years and more, so shingles at the end of their life underneath one become a second job with a date already on them — panels off, roof on, panels back. With thirty-four panels covering most of a 1,700 square foot roof, that job would effectively be the whole array and the whole roof at once. Eight days of sequencing removed it, and the panels went down onto a deck that had been stripped, seen and covered properly for the first time in two roof generations.
