A new roof, two layers off, and 192 feet of gutters
Two layers came off down to the plywood rather than a third going on over them – the right call whenever solar is following, because nobody wants to find soft decking after the panels are already up. Two thousand five hundred square feet of GAF Timberline HDZ in pewter gray went on in a single day, warranted fifty years, on a gable roof at a 6:12 pitch with its intake ventilation already in place. A hundred and ninety-two feet of gutters and leaders went on at the same time. That is not an afterthought when an array is going up the following week: gutters are fixed to the fascia the panels’ edge sits above, and doing them afterwards means a second crew working around a live system.
36 panels and 12.06 kW
Thirty-six LG modules on a SolarEdge inverter, estimated at 12,988 kilowatt hours in the first year. The array also got 155 feet of critter guard. The sheltered gap beneath a panel array is an inviting place for a squirrel to nest, and closing it while the crew is still on the roof costs a fraction of what evicting something and repairing the wiring costs afterwards.
A 10 kW Generac on a ten-circuit switch
The generator went on its own pad with a ten-circuit transfer switch – a nominated-circuits arrangement rather than a whole-house one, which is the sensible size when the object is to keep the heat, the refrigerator and the essentials running rather than to make an outage invisible. It has been on one of our monitored plans ever since: annual maintenance plus remote monitoring that Green Sun runs directly, so a fault reports itself rather than waiting to be found during the next storm.
Multicolored C9 lights
In 2024 she added C9 lights along the roofline. C9 is the large traditional bulb, and multicolored rather than warm white – a choice that needs a clean, uninterrupted eave line to look deliberate rather than busy, which is what a roof replaced five years earlier gives you.
Soft washing the siding
In 2026 the siding was soft washed. Soft washing is low pressure and a cleaning solution rather than a pressure washer, and on a house that already carries an array and a lighting run it is the only method that does not put at risk what is fastened to the roof.
What holding all five together buys
Every one of these decisions was made knowing what else was on the house. The roof went on before the panels rather than under them; the critter guard went on with the array rather than after a problem; the lighting crew works on a roofline we shingled ourselves and knows what is beneath it; and the soft wash was specified around an array a pressure washer would have damaged. That is the practical argument for one contractor across several trades – not the paperwork, but the fact that each job is designed around the ones already there.
