Leslie in Ocean has been a Green Sun Energy Services client since July of 2025. The standby generator was commissioned that September and the solar array three weeks later.
17 kW behind a 100-amp switch
Almost every house in this set has a 200-amp electrical service, and a fair number have 150. This one has 100 amps, and that single figure shapes both systems on the property.
The machine is a Generac Guardian 18 kW home standby, model 7226, delivering 17 kW on natural gas. The transfer switch behind it is service-rated at 100 amps — matched to the service, not to the generator, which is the rule and matters more here than usual. A switch sized to the machine rather than to the supply would be a switch the house cannot legally or safely feed.
The house is 2,055 square feet and the electrical calculation comes to 18,446 watts. A single load-management module takes the 5,500-watt air conditioning off the top while the generator is running, leaving 12,946 watts to carry, which the machine covers with room above it.
28 panels, 12.6 kW, in October
The array is twenty-eight REC 450-watt panels, 12.6 kW in total, on Unirac mounting with an Enphase IQ8X microinverter behind every panel. Estimated first-year production is 13,614 kWh and the utility is JCP&L. It was commissioned on 9 October 2025.
Twelve and a half kilowatts of generation on a 100-amp service is worth a moment. It works because a grid-tied array does not add to the house’s demand — it offsets it, and the interconnection is engineered around what the service can accept rather than around what the roof could hold.
The sump pump is the whole argument
There is a sump pump in this basement, and it is the reason the generator is here.
A sump pump is the only appliance in a house whose failure compounds. A refrigerator that loses power for six hours spoils what is in it. A furnace that stops means an uncomfortable night. A sump pump that stops during the storm that caused the outage means water rising in a basement for as long as the outage lasts — and the two events are not independent. The rain that brings the branch down on the line is the same rain the pump was installed to handle.
That is why backup power on a property with a sump is not a comfort purchase. Everything else on the circuit is inconvenience. The pump is the one that decides whether the household spends the following month dealing with the consequences.
The panels, meanwhile, do nothing at all during that outage — a grid-tied array shuts down the moment the utility fails, and must, so that it cannot energise a line a crew is working on. Two systems, two entirely separate jobs.

Often yes, provided the side yard satisfies both the manufacturer's clearances and the municipality's zoning requirements. The site review covers the property-line setback, windows and doors, the gas and electric meters, the air conditioner, neighboring structures, flood conditions, service access and any local screening requirement.
SolarIs the roof strong enough to carry solar?
It has to be verified as part of the design rather than assumed. The residential code requires the roof structure to support the loads the array imposes in addition to snow, wind and the rest. The evaluation looks at rafter or truss size, span, spacing, roof material, system weight, snow and wind loads, and where the attachments land.
SolarWho receives the certificates on a leased system?
That depends on the lease or power purchase agreement. Where solar is third-party owned, the system owner commonly retains the renewable-energy certificates and related incentives because it owns the generating equipment. The contract should say explicitly who owns the environmental attributes.
