Patrick Lee has been a Green Sun Energy Services client since December of 2019, when the roof and the solar array were bought on the same day. The roof was finished on 24 January 2020 and the array a fortnight later.
3,300 square feet, stripped to the deck
A single layer of old shingles came off down to the sheathing and left with the dumpster. GAF deck protection went over the exposed sheathing and ice shield up from the gutter edges, then a GAF Timberline HDZ system carrying a 50-year warranty, aluminum drip edge along 350 feet of rakes, eaves and valleys, and a ridge vent along the peak. Three hundred and fifty feet of edge on 3,300 square feet says a roof with a good deal of shape to it rather than two plain slopes, and every valley in it is a seam that has to be right.
24 panels and 8.04 kW
Twenty-four Hanwha Q.PEAK DUO G6 panels at 335 watts each came to 8.04 kW on Ecolibrium Solar mounting, finished on 6 February 2020, with a SolarEdge SE6000H inverter and an optimizer on every panel. JCP&L is the utility and the first year was designed for about 10,074 kWh — around 1,250 kWh for every kilowatt installed, which is what a well-oriented roof in this part of New Jersey returns.
Why the roof went first
An array is bolted to a roof for twenty-five years and more, so shingles near the end of their life underneath one are a second job with a date already on them: panels off, roof on, panels back. Buying both together settled it in advance, and on a roof with this many valleys it also meant the flashing and the array mounts were planned against each other rather than one being worked around the other afterwards.

The municipal construction department reviews and inspects the work under the Uniform Construction Code, but the substantive electrical requirements come from the statewide Electrical Subcode rather than from local preference. Municipalities may also administer zoning requirements where those apply.
